Lodge Conception No. 1679 S. C. is lodge of Freemasons that has been active in Conception Bay South since 1973. It is under the jurisdiction of the District Grand Lodge of Newfoundland and Labrador, which operates in the province, under the Grand Lodge of Scotland. The Grand Lodge is located in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Lodge Conception was erected on October 27th 1973 at ceremony held at the Queen Elizabeth Regional High School, on the Foxtrap Access Road. There were thirty-six Charter Members. The first meetings were held at the Lodge Rooms of the Society of United Fishermen at Topsail until September 1977. At that time the Lodge purchased the old St. Andrew's Anglican School building in Chamberlains. The building was completely renovated with a space that was used as a Lodge room, Club and Banquet area. There was also two commercial spaces for rent on the ground floor.
The success of the Lodge was such that by 1991 there was a need to renovate again so that the building could become more useful to the Lodge. By October 1991 the Lodge reopened with a totally new facelift. There was a new club and banquet area as well as a new modern kitchen. For the first time there was a Lodge Room with new furniture that was used for lodge meetings only.
"Today the spacious Masonic Hall accommodates the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Newfoundland & Labrador, Valley of St. Johnís. The Royal Order of Scotland, Provincial Grand of Newfoundland and Labrador is also accommodated at the Hall. On the ground level houses two successful business enterprises."
In 1993 the Lodge formed Lodge Conception Company Incorporated to administer the Building and its properties. There are rental areas that cater to weddings, private parties and showers. Each week there is a regular entertainment in the form of bingo held every Thursday night. The local TOPS Chapter meets very Wednesday. The building has become a very active social center.
As a fraternity in Conception Bay South, Lodge Conception has taken an active role in the community. It continues to support local charities and also on the provincial level. It has also became involved in housing in the area, entering into an agreement with the Newfoundland & Labrador Housing Corporation, and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in 1992 which resulted in the development of Freemasons Square on Anchorage Road in Long Pond.
In 1992 the Lodge formed Lodge Conception Masonic Housing Inc. to construction and manage a One Million Dollar Housing project, to be known as Freemason's Square. It is run by a board of directors who are members of the Lodge. This housing development provides 12 low-income families in the community with affordable housing. Freemason's Square consists of three quadraplexes - each containing four units- located in a well-landscaped setting off Anchorage Road. Four of the units are for senior citizens, six are family units and two are non-elderly singles units. One seniors unit and one family unit were constructed specifically for persons with disabilities. All units have fully equipped laundry facilities, private entrances and off-street parking.
